Outdoor adventures in Zacatecas

Zacatecas is a naturally colorful state, with a great environmental diversity perfect for all kinds of adventures with friends.

Sierra de Órganos National Park, in the municipality of Sombrerete, is breathtaking. Part of the Western Sierra Madre, it is one of the best places in the state for mountain biking and hiking.

These peculiar rock formations –which look like organ pipes, hence the name of the park– reach around 250 feet. You can walk around and climb them but going down the tracks on a mountain bike is the real thrill. Nights here are beautiful, as the sky in Zacatecas is always clear, perfect for watching many shinning stars.

At El Manantial park, in Sierra de Cardos, near Jerez, you can also practice hiking with amazing views –there are many tracks with different degrees of difficulty. There are caves and tunnels, a hanging bridge and a natural pool with crystal clear water.

As for flying adventures, go to Cerro de la Bufa and get on the zip-line. The ride is 1,300 feet long and there are several styles to do it: the traditional way (sitting on a harness and holding on for dear life); with no hands; superhero (arms and legs crossed and upside down), and finally, the extreme: upside down, with crossed legs and no hands. The views of the city, no matter which side you are on, are awesome. Take a GoPro to capture them.

To make the best of these experiences, take note: do not forget to take plenty of water, insect repellent, sunscreen and very comfortable shoes and clothes.
